California is notorious for having high living expenses, so it’s no surprise that a new report found the Golden State had the second-highest monthly rent in America.

Doxo, a bill-paying service, released its annual Household Bill Pay report, which found that, on average, Californians pay $1,927 in monthly rent.

Researchers used data from the U.S. Census Bureau to determine the ranking.

These are the 10 U.S. states with the highest monthly rent

  1. Hawaii: $1,983
  2. California: $1,927
  3. Massachusetts: $1,684
  4. New York: $1,636
  5. New Jersey: $1,629
  6. Washington: $1,620
  7. Maryland: $1,603
  8. Colorado: $ 1,580
  9. Virginia: $1,497
  10. Florida: $1,474

The report found that 32% of American households pay monthly rent, which, on average, costs $1,300.

In addition to having high rent prices, researchers found that the top five states also have the highest mortgage costs.

The report found that California residents pay an average of $2,576 in monthly bills, while the average U.S. household spends $1,402.

Researchers considered bills such as auto loan payments, utilities, cable and internet, and phone service to be among monthly expenses.

In addition to rent and other expenses, Californians can also pay state income taxes as high as 13.3%, the highest in the country, according to Sofi.

2021 Bureau of Economic Analysis report found that California’s annual average cost of living is $53,082.

The report also identified West Virginia, Arkansas, South Dakota, Mississippi, and North Dakota as the top five states with the lowest average monthly rent.
