Stockton residents spend 23% more on bills than average U.S. household, analysis says

Stockton residents spend about 23% more on bills each month than the average,  American household, a recent analysis found.

Stockton households pay $2,322 for the 10 most common monthly bills, according to an analysis by the bill payment company Doxo. The average U.S. household pays $1,889.

Households in Stockton and across the U.S. are struggling to cover costs amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The city of Stockton offers an assistance program that can cover 100% of applicants’ overdue rent or utility bills.

Housing payments made up the largest portion of monthly bills, according to the analysis. Mortgage payments in Stockton were $1,663 on average, and rent was $1,269 on average. Stockton homeowners spend about 20% of their income on housing.

Stockton ranked 14th in the state for the cost of monthly bills. The San Jose area ranked No. 1 with an average cost of $3,151. Clearlake was the least expensive, with an average cost of $1,700.

Stockton households pay about 9% less than the average California household.

Bills included in Doxo’s analysis include housing payments, utilities, health insurance, auto loan payments, and other common expenses.
