Ten Capital Region Places Where Household Bills are Most Affordable

Nothing in life is free, but goodness, does New York really make a strong effort to point that out every chance it gets.

I kid (kind of), but the cost of living in the state of New York isn’t something to scoff at. When it comes to household bills in 2022, there are so many different avenues where one must send their hard-earned money each month.

From mortgage or rent payments, to the many different forms of insurance, to cell phone payments, gas bills and beyond, the monthly fees really add up. Depending on where you live in the state, however, your monthly bills might vary pretty severely.

In a story published by ABC News 10, the analytics-based website Doxo Insights published a study breaking down how much money was spent, on average, on monthly bills in municipalities across the country. The municipality of Albany, for example had the seventh-highest average monthly bill total cost of all qualifying places in the area, with Saratoga Springs coming in at the top of the list.

To calculate these totals, Doxo Insights tallied up a number of costs, mainly insurance, mortgage, car and cell phone bills. They presented the average cost compared to other areas around the Capital Region, and News 10 ranked them, from most expensive, to least.

So, what is the average cost of monthly household bills in the area you live? We listed out the ten most affordable places in the Capital Region to call home, and laid out how much money you’d be spending per month in order to live there.

2. Northport, NY

With just 27.56 crimes per 100,000 residents, Northport is the second safest city in the county, trailing only Wayland, MA (7.22, somehow). The 2010 census identified kids under 18, and adults 45-64 as the highest percentages of residents, likely meaning a number of families call the area home.

Just south of the Capital Region, Greene County’s Coxsackie is a top-five safest city in America. The crime rate is just 37.66 per 100,000 residents, making it the perfect quaint historical city.

6. Durham, NY

Also representing Greene County, Durham, NY is so quiet and reserved, there isn’t even a picture that comes up when you scroll over the town’s name on Google Maps. A crime rate of 37.76 keeps it squarely among the safest.

8. Pine Plains, NY

The final representative of the Top 10 in New York state, Pine Plains checks in with a crime rate of 41.68 per 100,000. The heavily wooded area has a population of 2,472 as of the 2010 census.

11. Norfolk, NY

Just outside of the Top 10, Norfolk, NY checks in in St. Lawrence County, miles from the Canada border. The crime rate of the area sits at 45.66 per 100,000.

15. Webb, NY

Located north and west of the Capital Region, Herkimer County’s Webb, New York follows the pack as the 15th safest city/town in the nation. The 56.21 keeps families and residents safe in many instances. The town is a stop along the legendary Adirondack Railroad, which will reportedly resume its service this year.

16. Cooperstown, NY

While you’re looking at some of the best and brightest in the history of the game of baseball, you can also feel confident walking to and from your car! Jokes aside, Cooperstown is incredibly safe, the 16th-ranked city/town in the nation, checking in from Otsego County.

21. Chatham, NY

With a history dating back to 1795, Chatham is another in a long line of quaint, history-filled towns in the state of New York. Chatham’s crime rate of 62.27 ranks 21st among cities and towns in America.

Located just northwest of New York City, Orange County’s Cornwall, New York represents the last of the ten New York cities/towns in the top 25 safest in America.
